Skincare is something that I turn to when I’m not feeling the greatest, because it always uplifts me and makes me feel like I’ve done something productive, even when I’m too down to get anything else done.
I have combination oily + dry skin, and I am very acne prone. My skin is quite sensitive so I tend to gravitate towards natural products, nothing too harsh or with chemicals I’m not familiar with. Here are some of my favourite natural options and products.
Witch hazel – Witch hazel is an all natural skin toner derived from the plant that is native to north america. Witch hazel is proven to be great for acne prone skin. It helps balance out oil prone skin, tone acne scars, and help treat swelling and redness from acne. Just swipe witch hazel all over your face with a cotton pad or fingertips.
Witch hazel can be found at local drugstores or health food stores.
Lavender oil – Lavender oil is my personal favourite essential oil. It is also an anti-inflammatory, and is a great natural option for drying out acne. Lavender can also help with insomnia and reducing anxiety. Dab lavender oil on trouble spots with a cotton pad or fingertips. If you’re going to apply lavender oil all over the face dilute with water or another natural oil such as coconut or jojoba oil, or add to your daily moisturizer.
Lavender oil can be found at health food stores.
Glossier masks – The Glossier face masks are some of my favourite masks to put on when I’m having some self care time. Glossier masks retail for $22 USD each or $40 USD together. Find them as well as other great skincare products at glossier.com
- Mega Greens Galaxy Pack – This mask is said to balance, purify. Made with avocado oil, aloe vera, mild kaolin clay, and a “super fruit blend”, Mega Greens is gentle yet cleansing clay mask that makes your skin feel clean and glowy. This mask can be used several times a week, I usually try to use it twice. Just apply and leave on for 20 minutes, then rinse.
- Moisturizing Moon Mask – Described as soothing and hydrating, Moon mask uses natural emollients such as shea butter and almond oil, as well as hyaluronic acid, one of the greatest ingredients in skin moisturizers, to plump and condition your face. This mask can be used as much as you like, I always use after the Mega Greens, and sometimes by itself when my skin needs extra moisture. Apply for 20 minutes then rinse. You can also apply a thin layer overnight during the winter months when your skin tends to be dryer.
Fresh Rose Deep Hydration Facial Toner – This toner not only smells beautiful, but feels beautiful on the skin. It makes my face feel plump and hydrated, made with real rose fruit extract, rose water, and hyaluronic acid. It reduces the appearance of pores and leaves you feeling cleansed. This toner retails for $44 USD and can be found on fresh.com along with the rest of the rose skincare line.
