A collection and analyzation of vintage makeup tutorials on film from 1930- 1969.
It is amazing just how full circle we as a society may come regarding trend circulation. This collection of tutorials has been gathered over months of obsessive clicking on YouTube. It is so intriguing to look back at how makeup was perceived and marketed in its earliest years thriving in a capitalistic society. Although the makeup market was running on insecurity and misogynistic ideals, let’s’ look back and see how far we’ve come with the way makeup is perceived, advertised, and used as a form of expression and self confidence.
1936, we see the first attempts at contour.
1938 called, they want their 2003 eyebrow trend back.
1940 rolled around, contouring was out, but primer and skincare were in.
1969 we finally begin to see a progression of the beauty market including diversity and focus on the innermore beauty of a human being.
Once the 1970’s hit, I couldn’t find any videos. And if I were to carry on up to current makeup tutorials, we would be here for quite awhile. I hope you enjoyed looking back at the fascinating ways makeup was used, perceived, and marketed as much as I did.
Until next time,
All my love,
